Five Points Festival in New York – comic artists, art toys, Kidrobot, Tokidoki, Buff Monster, and more

Thanks to Maura at Linda Roth for inviting me !  I was so lucky to be asked to attend Five Points Festival, a designer toy and comic convention presented by Clutter Magazine and Midtown Comics and sponsored by Playcrafting. Hungry New Yorkers, comic collectors, and art toy enthusiasts found amazingness on May 20-21 at Pier 36.  I love mobile businesses as you know I started Caravan and back in 2005 when I started it- it was me and the mud truck now there are tons of mobile businesses so I am a fan ! Inside the festival was all the booths and the opp to have meet and greets with amazing artists and creators and outside was the mobile trucks & pop up eating & drinking quarters curated by the Live Fast Group. There was  Lagunitas Brewing Company   The new Festival was a  collision between comic artists and writers, toy designers and customizers (with an extensive Neo-Kaiju and Sofubi section), and original street artists, all punctuated with an impressive lineup of craft food and beer. Enthusiasts familiar with art toys had the chance to meet some of the world’s most iconic misfit artists and brands shaking up the industry like Huck Gee, Kidrobot, James Groman, Ron English of Popaganda, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Super7, Tara McPherson, and Mighty Jaxx on the show floor.

Now I don’t know too much about this world but I know I love Tokidoki – I sold a ton of it back in 2005 – 2010 at Caravan on mobile store and in my stores it is GENIUS !! I love it a ton it makes me smile.

I also know I got to see my friend Dana and found myself with the coolest new Buff Monster piece to frame and patch …. I missed him but heard that Morgan Spurlock was at the show and took a photo at the Buff Monster booth

I love Buff Monster’s work because his work is colorful and has so many shapes and movement and I love ice cream so there you go ….Buff Monster is a New York City street artist who uses bright colors, bold lines and funny characters to make the world a better place. He names heavy metal music, ice cream, pop art, Japanese culture and graffiti as major influences. For over 15 years, he’s worked with leading curators to paint murals all over the world and is included in Banksy’s Oscar-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. His meticulously executed paintings have been shown in galleries around the world; the Bristol City Museum has a painting in their permanent collection. He’s worked with some of the most recognizable brands, such as Disney, Converse, Hello Kitty, Samsung, Nike and Coca-Cola. Now under the brand name Stay Melty, he continues to release a variety of limited-edition collectibles, including vinyl and resin toys, prints, shirts, stickers and trading cards.  Scott & I went to see this exhibition which was so rad too :

I met the creator of SAD SALESMAN and really loved his work http://trampt.com/artists/13307/sad-salesman-eric-althin/items

This really hit home with me the Sad Salesman part because sometimes when I am trying to get sponsors for my studio I feel like one…. doors being slammed in the face and you get sad but you have to keep going !

I loved his work so much – I wanted it all when I have more money again I am going to definitely invest in some of his originals. I used to invest in some great pieces of art but with the studio and funding that it is hard to do that now but hopefully in a couple of years I can get back into it – for now I bought a print but I wanted all of those too!
